Hypothyroidism is a common condition that affects your thyroid glands. Your thyroid glands do not produce sufficient thyroid hormones. These hormones are needed to maintain many of your body’s systems including metabolism and weight. 

The most common cause of this condition is an autoimmune disease wherein your immune cells attack the thyroid gland and keep it from functioning well. Some other causes of Hypothyroidism may include a history of cancer, certain medications, radiation treatment, and insufficient iodine in the diet. 

How Does Hypothyroidism Affect Weight?

Hypothyroidism has long been linked with weight gain, but the exact cause of this connection is not fully understood. However, several mechanisms may explain the connection in cases of low thyroid function. Thyroid hormones usually help the body break down fat and help the function of the pancreas and liver to metabolize stored calories to be used for energy.

These hormones also help the muscles throughout the body as they use energy. All of these actions can be disturbed when you have reduced thyroid hormones or weakened thyroid function. Along with symptoms of low energy, the body also holds on to calories, storing them as fat, which is especially difficult to burn off and metabolize.

If you have Hypothyroidism, losing weight can be very challenging. Lots of people think that once you start taking thyroid hormone replacement medications, the weight just falls off.   • Eliminate gluten 
  • Get enough exercise
