Probiotics are friendly bacteria that provide health benefits. They are often plentiful and live in your gut and most of them are beneficial. A study found that the bacteria in your body are in the same quantity as your body’s cells at a 1:1 ratio. These are often taken as a supplement to strengthen the gut microbiome. They provide several health benefits including healthy weight and strong immunity.

Probiotics are living microorganisms that provide several health benefits when ingested. However, scientists are not sure about the strains that give these benefits. Supplements that contain probiotics and prebiotics are known as synbiotics.

The Signs That You Need Probiotics

  1. You have skin disorders such as eczema. Your skin naturally contains several types of bacteria. The good or friendly bacteria in your skin prevent harmful bacteria from settling in your pores and causing different issues such as eczema. Topical treatments of probiotics are found to be effective skin problem treatments.
  2. Sleeping difficulties. Your gut microbiome can directly interact with the brain through the vagus nerve. Most of this communication is from the gut to the brain. This brain-gut-microbiome axis looks after the secretion of the amino acid. This compound assists in converting serotonin into melatonin.
  3. You have frequent health issues. A well-balanced and healthy gut microbiome relates to a strong immune system. It tackles several pathogens that may invade your body. These bacteria regulate your inflammatory response to fight pathogens, preventing the immune system from attacking your body’s systems and causing disorders.
  4. You have bowel disorders. The apparent signs of an unbalanced microbiome are constipation and diarrhea. Taking probiotic supplements helps treat all major bowel issues, including diarrhea and constipation. Probiotics are even considered a natural treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.
  5. You have frequent mood swings. Your gut health and probiotics level is also linked to disorders such as anxiety, stress, and depression. The brain and gut have a connection by interacting with mood-related hormones and neurotransmitters.
  6. You are obese. A research study found that obese people have different gut bacteria than lean ones. Although there is not much research available, specific probiotic strains are linked to proper weight loss. Probiotics enable the body to break down fats into simpler forms that cells can utilize to gain energy.

Foods to Avoid When Taking Probiotics

  • GMO products. There are several ways GMOs interfere with the effect of probiotics. The herbicides used when growing these foods harm your gut health. Genetic modifications in plants may also alter the function of the bacteria in the digestive tract when you eat GMO foods.
  • Red meat. You should know that red meat can interfere with probiotics, but it also can be bad for your heart. A nutrient in red meat, choline, can produce special gut bacteria when you eat red meat and eggs, which is not good for your gut and your body in general.
  • Carbonated drinks. Whether you are binging on regular or diet sodas, neither is good for your gut health. Sugars and artificial sweeteners in carbonated drinks can kill the good bacteria in your gut or alter it.
  • Processed foods and probiotics. The majority of packaged foods interfere with probiotics as they are loaded with preservatives and unhealthy additives. These additives destroy the healthy bacteria in your gut and create an imbalance between the good and the bad bacteria in your digestive system.
  • Refined oils. Highly refined vegetable oils like corn, canola, sunflower, and soybean promote inflammation in the gut. These oils damage the lining of your intestine and decrease your gut health, interfering with the job of the probiotics.
  • Gluten-Rich foods. It could cause stomach discomfort and promote inflammation in the gut. So, eliminating gluten from your diet or at least reducing it will help you make sure that the probiotics you are taking are doing the work.
